Mexico City

MEXICO CITY -- Francisco Trujillo of NTX Mexican News agency contacted me to determine MUFON's opinion of a photograph taken on Tuesday, December 19, 2000, by a professional photographer Alfonso Reyes of Notimex. He has taken a remarkable photograph of a brightly lit object racing toward the Popocatepetl Volcano near Mexico City. He was capturing the awakening and explosive eruption of the volcano that is seen in the background. There is no reason to assume the photograph was hoaxed by one of their trusted photographer. He claims he did not see the object while taking the shot at 6:10 AM. The object was observed after the picture was developed. The photograph is a 20 second time exposure taken with a 24 MM lens. The time exposure accounts for the streak that reveals the object's trajectory that appears to descend towards the volcano. It is difficult to discern if the object is moving toward or away from the camera. Popocatepetl means " Smoking Mountain" and the volcano started new eruptions the previous day.

The object may be the result of Earth Lights; volcanic related earthquakes, pyro plastic flows, or plasmas caused by titanic earth stresses. Of course the object may be simply a UFO and detailed analysis is under way. Many UFOs have been seen and photographed in the area in the past. For example, on June 29, 1999, the surveillance camera of the CENAPRED, the goverment agency for disasters prevention was monitoring Popocatepetl taking time lapse photos at intervals. A disk shaped dark object was photographed near the volcano crater at 1:20 PM It emerged from the smoke clouds. Other photos and video of UFOs have been seen. Vocanologists have been concerned that the volcano may explode, but shortly after the photo was taken the volcano mysteriously stopped its eruptions. UFOs seem to have a strange fascination with volcanoes so if the eruptions continue there are likely to be more photos and video. Now Popocatepetl does not appear dangerous but chances for good UFO photos continue.

In 1991, as thousands of citizens in Mexico stared up into the sky at the eclipse, something unusual was spotted. Countless people claim to have witnessed, for lack of a better term, what can only be described as a UFO. Jaime Maussan was born in Mexico City, and earned a B.A. degree in radio and television from the Miami University in Ohio. He has had a 25 year career in the media and has received several awards. He is now General Director and Anchorman of "60 Minutes" Mexico.
After the 1991 Eclipse, he received a video tape of the event that showed a strange, silver disk hovering over the city. Maussan then asked his viewers to share any unusual sightings they might have had during the eclipse. To his and everyone elses amazement, 15 different video tapes, from different locations around the city and from different individuals, were produced. No one was prepared for what may be considered some of the best video evidence collected so far. Since then, Maussan has compiled over 5,000 videos and photos from eyewitnesses.
This could be one of the largest collections of UFO videos in the world. He also produces a radio program "Jaime Maussan, UFOs and other Mysteries", which is a very popular show in Mexico. This story has also appeared on several U.S. programs such as SIGHTINGS. The 1991 eclipse marked one of the most intense and sustained UFO flaps on record to date. Countless individuals have recorded the same or similar objects on video since and the residence of Mexico (and the rest of the world for that matter) have yet to receive an explaination as to just what these "disks" are and what they are doing there. This remains being just one more piece of evidence that can't be easily swept under the rug and ignored. Most investigators agree that something is or at least was going on there, and many demand to know what, to no avail.
